Gamers Net NZ to close
3rd July 2009

Well it's been a good run, through Skankyflat, Jetstream Gaming and finally Gamers.

It is with much sadness and regret that the Gamers Net NZ admin team is announcing the closure of the service. This is not due to us wishing to discontinue the service we are providing, but our primary sponsor Orcon pulling the plug on their support due to the current financial situation.

Firstly a big thank you to Orcon for supporting us for the last couple of years, we really have appreciated all they have done for us, and without their ongoing support, this venture is plainly just not viable for us to continue.

We had approached a number of parties to try and continue ongoing support for the service, but the current climate means very few companies are willing to invest. So we have been left with very little choice but to stop.

The effective date for closure is the 20th of July 2009. At this time we will be turning off all game servers, voice servers (both ventrilo and teamspeak). We will not be turning off the web serving initially. If you have a subdomain off gamers.net.nz the hosting service will remain active for a period of 1 month after the closure of the game servers.

If you have hosting for your own domain you can continue to have this with us, at the price of $10 a month, as we will be continuing to provide hosting (indeed it is our primary business), or if you wish to move to another hosting provider, we will allow 3 months to facilitate this move.

We will not be accepting any further server orders, and will be cancelling all subscriptions made via Paypal. If you have made a payment for your service after the 10th of July we will refund your payment. We will be removing all bills from the system, so no service will be discontinued before the 20th of July.

Should you have any questions or queries in relation to your game, voice or web hosting, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will endeavour to answer it as soon as possible.

We thank you for your support over the years. And we're really sad to go. See you on the other side.

What ?!!!!!

Does this mean the end of the SAF 2142 server?

If this site needs a new home I'll gladly provide hosting on my webserver for you for free. Let me know and I'll get the account up and running fast.

I knew from past investigations into their setup it looked like they were seriously overstretching their resources, sadly it seems that was true.

As we discussed before I even looked into ways of starting a game server there in NZ but the obstacle I always hit was being able to provide ranked servers due to the door being closed on getting a licence from EA for new hosts to do so.

What will you do? I know the options are already pitifully limited for the NZ market.

If you do want me to host let me know quick, I'll need to get a domain name (whatever one is to be tied to the account set up in the server dns zone files so switchover is not delayed I mean) and site up and running superfast so you can get a move notice up so as many visitors as possible are made aware of it to limit the damage before the current site goes down.

So what next?
What other companies are available with this type of service?

I know from a past discussion with SAF (lost in the forum DB nuke) that there are virtually no other local options, mabye one other company if memory serves me correctly.

See above

Im personally a little outraged with Orcon and their very proud OZone service. They were very happy to boast that gamers.net was part of this service and what usage savings were to be had (especially good for me) then pulls the pin in less than 3 months...cool!

A Brief Update - a quick call to Orcon technical support and have discovered that no memo has been circulated within Orcon stating Gamers closure as yet. There is now a very shocked and saddened Orcon support person (also an avid online gamer). Apparently, if feedback is desired on this calamity or what direction is next you need to talk/email the marketing team on Monday - bah!

Orcon is dead to me, given my recent technical issues and now this, I am changing back to Telecoms - "double your data for free for 6 months" cheaper than Or-"CON" now.

As for the game hosting, we have some ideas and alternatives up our sleeves for attempting to resolve this.

What I can say is that the site hosting and domain number "saf.net.nz" is under control, the site and clan will continue.

I was all ready to dive in to save the site ;D Glad you have options available.

Right about now if I was there (local market) and had some buying power I'd be looking to investigate buying the gamers.net.nz brand and company intellectual property at an agressively low bidding point (made easier as they have publicly stated shutting up shop) to see if the EA licencing was transferrable under company property and any other official software licencing etc etc. in the hopes to cheaply acquire the ability to create a commercial hosting service of my own ;)

Hosts get bought and sold all the time, often without end users knowlege, I'm suprised they didnt attempt that route. I am a member of a certain hosting community site, possibly the best one on the web and selling and buying auctions are commonplace.

If I'm not far off here I would like to nominate myself to assist in any way I can, I'm no stranger to the technical issues of running and hosting with webservers ;D

I missed a small detail, the server needs to be ranked and thats where one of the problems lay, not too many hosts. Oh well.

but if there are any issues with raising cash etc for a new server let me know SAF.

Looks like we have until 19th August to move the forum so please remember to bookmark WWW.SAF.NET.NZ as we own this and can redirect it to the new location. Do not use saf.gamers.net.nz as it will be removed. If they keep their current form probably without too much notice.

Again, make sure your bookmark is set to WWW.SAF.NET.NZ

Clan S.A.F is still alive and will remain that way until we find a new home for our game server. The forum is the best place to hang out to keep up-to-date with developments as we have positive news to post.

It was an awesome nite last nite, many thank yous to all the awesome gamers who spent hours with us (including clans) even though they knew it was our last night on our server, instead of heading off somewhere else and making new friends you all stuck it out alongside S.A.F, we appreciate that, new server will be up and running soon, and we will catch up again on the battlefield.
Many thanks to Action2 who is spearheading this new event

Sigh, I'm too busy right now to fix my computer gear so I can get back on. Would have liked to join in.

It may have been the last night of the old server but remember its only a short pause, something new will undoubtedly be along as many here have no intention of letting things come to an end :)

New server is alive... just waiting for it to appear in the EA Master List and we'll submit it to game-monitor.com so we can have the usual activity image on the forum board index page.
