should just get I7 cpu and board and 3 channel ram, then you have the latest intel gear.

looks like you taking my rig on the cheap...... :P

get the i7 Petey..quad gives plenty of bang for buck..other than that..it looks sturdy ....
3 channel RAM says Goaty ?more RAM is always a good option but not essential..I got it because I wanted to alt tab a lot and because it was my first 64 bit system i figured..what the hell..give it some power......but they say Win 7 is pretty light on the throttle for memory

A couple of things from my point of view - the I7 is an awesome processor, specially the 9xx series. The 8xx I7 series is not that much ahead of the I5, remember that their all pretty serious processors. Going to the 9xx gives you a much bigger pricetag, with an additional channel for memory ( 50% more memory bandwidth... ) It also gives the ability to go to a hex core if you ever want to. But reality is that if your going to upgrade the CPU your going to do the mobo too. I remember there being something about PCI-E 2.0 and the X55 chipset not being too happy. But I cant remember exactly why. Maybe surv might be a better geek than I am :D

I79xx's only want 3 sticks of ram, so if you get really keen and want to spend $750ish on 12GB, get 3*4, dont get 6*2. This is to do with the max timing you will achieve. Simply put, the latency of having ram in the most distant slot from the cpu limits the ram speed to about 1ghz.

Otherwise, the best thing to do from my point of view is to see where you feel the best price / performance point is on toms hardware, and base your decisions around this.

And what happened to your comment last night of "I wont buy Intel"?????? :D:D:D:D

edit :
If you have not already read it, www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-gaming-cpu,review-31836-5.html should give you a good basis for the choice in processor.

My I7 with 12GB, 2*1TB WD black caviars, a 4850oc video card and a bluray writer cost something like $2900 a year ago

Actually, further to my comments, if you watch the market, and get yourself a second video card as their being phased out, you will add a heap of video processing speed for not that much cost, and its spreading the cost out a little.

yeah i have the i7 920 266 which can be very happy clocked at 28-.8 or 3.0Ghz no stress on it at all
its like 2 quad cores in one 8 cpu's
cant go wrong
if i can change it will be the ram need more
my rig will last me for another 2-3 years.

petey your FIRST purchase should be a CASE no PSU
they dont move in price so its down to who has the cheapest of what you want.
Next would be PSU
Any ROM drives
M/Board
RAM/CPU/HDD 2nd to last
and last VIDEO

I just completed a cheap upgrade ~$700 to tide me over for a year or so when I can throw some $ at something more serious. Maybe wait for i9?

Replaced Motherboard with Gigabyte GA-EP41-UD3L
Replaced E6550 with Core 2 Quad Q9400 2666 MHz
New MB didn't like old RAM so 3 x 1 GB replaced with 2 x 2GB Ram
Arctic Ice Pro Xtreme CPU cooler (fantastically quiet with fan wedged between two radiators), didn't plan on this upgrade but the old MB had 3 pin speed control and the new standard is 4 pin and 3000RPM CPU fan with no speed control was not an option!

Finally the GTS250 1GB that replaced my dead 8800 has a PCI-E 2.0 slot.

Coffee meet sounds great just txt me the day before so I can plan a trip into NM. Not totally up with all the "best-of" hardware.

You should get a quote from PlayTech and see what they are putting in their systems -- just to compare price vs performance.

A bit OT here, ( I already talked to pete about this ) but I just bought another Gigabyte HD485OC - identical to the one in my PC. To xfire my current machine. $100 on TM.

But before I put it into my PC a mate borrowed it, he has a 3650, AMD 6000 or 6400, 4gb of ram and only runs 1024*768 in game ( he still plays on CRT's )

Simply put, he was struggling to get more than about 30fps at 1024*768, high settings, whereas an identical card in my i7 gets 60+fps at 1920*1080 everything set to max in advanced. xfire 2 4850's and I am getting in excess of 120fps :D (Te - must be time for you to chip in with 5970 tall poppy syndrome? :D )
Both his cores are sitting near maxed out, if not at 100%. Mine has most cores/threads sitting at 20-30%, and one sitting up near 75%. I think it was Ploppy who pointed out that frostbite is well setup for "many" core machines.

He was also suffering crashes to desktop, PB issues and the same old things everyone was moaning about. He noticed his hard drives were doing a lot of work, mine do nothing in game. Turned off the hdd paging/swap file in windows, and the game runs a whole lot better now.

I think Fonterra is paying you too much....time for a visit to your farm with some E coli I have culturing here...hmm and a few ab residues would be a stinger.....

Dudes the 5970 ROCKS! My rig does launch/start round slowly but i am at 5 crash to desk tops in BC2 and thats it .....running everything at max and getting average 120 fps with Everest reporting boring cpu temps..this baby is BBaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!

That and get an SSD for your OS ...it means launch anything in double quick time

But for the look of the rest of your proprosed new rig :
"thats a bleeddy lekker system yaar? Fekking buy it mon" and then you wont be jumping back to 2142 so often...BC2 looks sweet when its playing on the right rig

Pete. get a new sig!!!! :D

SSD's are currently a bit of a luxury, and your budget appears not to run to that. They might improve load times a bit, but their not the be all and end all, specially not at their current price/gb ratio.

Have you made a decision of the video / CPU based on the point where the price/performance graph starts getting steep? Thats the best point for value, just as it ramps up dramatically ( although you probably realize this anyway )

But what you do have to choose is the basic architecture you want - I3/I5/I7 8xx or I7 9xx and up? Or AMD with their upcoming hex core? Most reviews really do point toward the I5 quad ( 750? ) as being the bees knees for gaming at the moment for those of us who don't have a massive budget. Same for the 5770 actually. Most of the more objective reviewers also will say that the flagship AMD processors are just as good for gaming as Intel's, the Ix processors have massive advantages in other areas however.

Just balance the system nicely, but get as much RAM as you can afford, while still leaving an upgrade path.

That path will have 3 distinct components - a second video card and X-fire it, doubling or even tripling the ram, and potentially a RAID hard drive setup for better tx rates. I suspect that current gen processors are going to be still useful in 3 years.

Edit, I just got asked to spec a PC for my brother - his stipulation was not more than $1500AUD. note 2 hard drives in there - and I can attest that no 7200rpm drive performs quite like the current gen WD blacks. Specially when you have a caching hardware raid controller :p

Hopefully I can attach the specs below...

buy what you got up on the page..I am still unsure from what Poos said if thats a quad core or not..but thats what you need to play BC2 in comfort ..get that and any extra dollars you have put in RAM
