After a few months of over-clocking my e5200 to 3.6ghz, recently my pc fell over. RIP... aka Good riddance!

As far as I can tell, the mainboard just gave up. Tested the CPU/ram etc, and they all still work fine. So naturally, that's been put on TradeMe, along with my X-fi soundcard, and my partners old P4 computer.

After a bit of saving, I'll have enough to upgrade once my TradeMe stuff sells within the week or so.

The plan is to finally go socket 1155/DDR3, and the parts I have chosen are:

- Intel i5 2400 (w00t! i5 ftw!)
http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=375/ID=15261/SID=602272715/productdetails.html

- Asus P8H61M Pro B3
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8H61M_PRO/

- 4gb kit of G.Skill RipJaw DDR3 1333 at CL8-8-8-24
http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=254/ID=15298/SID=306285679/productdetails.html

Basically, it's a Quad-Core setup with the option for SLI, on a budget. As much as I'd like to put more money into it, I've stretched what I can get even with this lot, but im sure it'll be enough grunt to get some decent frames in BF3.

Rest of my pc will remain the same, especially my case, and I'm buying Phantoms 750watt PSU off him, since he went and got his new beast. lol

As much as I despise my Ati 4870, I'll stick with it for now. But if I get a bit more than I expected for my parts on TradeMe, I do have my eyes fixed firmly on a nVidia GTX550 Ti, mainly the Asus DirectCU version, or if I can get ahold of one, the EVGA Superclocked version (That vents out the rear of the case). Should be sufficient with an i5 for BF3 at first, but soon as I can manage it, two of them SLI would be a beasty rig I reckon.

Klawful with a rig that doesn't suck... what a wonder that will be. I already know my gameplay increases dramatically when I get to have a jam on Phantom's rig every now and then. So I'm sure with a stable frame rate, my new rig will allow me to play to the best of my ability, and bring the pain for Battlefield 3.

Let the frag-fest begin!

Ah ha, this would be the ideal card. Playtech DOES have it, w00t! (I must of over-looked it)

EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB 192-bit GDDR5!
http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=/ID=16382/SID=802237602/productdetails.html

I am told two of these in SLI, should either come close to, or beat, a single GTX580. Good enough for me!

Buy the 2500K what ever you do if you need to eat 2min noodles for a few weeks that is the CPU to get. You need the K version for easy overclocking and its silly not to get it for an extra $40

For ram this www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=2.../productdetails.html
Why get 4gig when you can get 8gig now for swt fuck all. And having the lower timings have little benifit with a sandybridge set up.

I hear the standard 2400 can still over-clock, just not as high. But that's irrelevant, because I am done with over-clocking anyway. If I do OC it (unlikely), it'll be a very mild OC and it'll be done with a good quiet cooler on it.

As for 8gb over 4gb... I haven't seen any modern game or program use a full 4gb of memory under Windows 7 anyway. Anything more just seems over-kill unless you're trying to future proof (I'm sure Windows 8 will eat 8gb of ram just as an appetizer). I'll stick with 4gb for now.
If demand calls for it, by the time I look at 8gb, the price will be low enough that I can get 8gb of low CL performance ram and still have change.

If I put any extra into this upgrade, I'll like get a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD , and then raid my existing 80gb SATA2 drives for speed as my primary OS/Installed Games drive. I still have my old 250gb IDE drive as storage, and it's playing up a bit. Need to modernize it. (As for SSD's, I say... MEH! I'll wait for em to drop in price)

Your not going to go for the 2500K because you wont be doing overclocking? you realise with a cooler and a few ticks with the mobo oc utility you get 4.5ghz easy as pie

Ram fair enough. But you are stupid to not get the 2500K for $40 difference.

Real world experince with guys overclocking these rigs btw not just sitting at home reading some benchmark reviews.

Meh. He seems to have made up his mind James. I agree with u tho about getting the 2500k. I for one get flagship hardware. I bought my i7 920 like 2 yrs ago and its still current and on my last pc i bought 2 x gtx 280 which lasted me 3.5 yrs. I use to buy mid to low range gear when i was young only because my finances where shit. But knowing what i know now its worth the few extra dollars to go one or two up in the long run. Dude its just $40. U know u want it :)

After a bit of reading, I've decided to go a bit further. Going to get a better mainboard, so I have head-room for future upgrades.

At the moment, looking at:
Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3
$228 later...

And yes, ofcourse the i5 2500k, for a nice over-clock in the future.
Another $295 later...

Working on the ram next week, but will likely be 4gb of DDR1600, at whatever CL I can afford. lol

Going to keep my X-fi Card.

With any luck I might be getting myself some CL7 G.Skill Ripjaw memory. FTW!

This is going to be a killer rig. I likely wont bother upgrading anything other than the graphics over the next 2 years. lol (and maybe the HDD)

Heck, when the time comes to OC it, If I can get it stable, I reckon I'll get maybe even 3 years out of the CPU. What the hell is going to need more than 4 Cores of 4-5ghz for gaming? Battlefield 4? LMAO.

It won't be anything too flashy as far as GPU core goes, sticking with my 4870 for now. Despite the awesome CPU/Mobo im getting, I've completely exhausted my funds and getting any kind of improved video card is out of the question at the moment. lol

Tho I'm sure my CPU will put out some rather interesting numbers...

After a bit of reading, I'll be getting the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 , as the XP-UD3 model is the "Ultra Durable 3" design, with higher quality components, which will be good for making it last longer, be more stable, lower temperatures, and better over-clocking, from what I've read.
The Z68A model has just standard quality parts, and there is almost no difference in cost, so that's a no-brainer. lol

I say go Gigabyte all the way :) They use there Ultra Durable parts in all there top end motherboards as well as graphics cards. So you know nothing will pop if you ever decide to do abit of extreme overclocking. Plus UD runds cooler and allows for cleaner more stable power.

Ive had Asus, Nvidia, Acer etc motherboards before. Gigabyte has been the best for me so far although Im sure Evga and maybe some others top manufacturers can be just as solid.

Yah, im pretty happy with my choices at the moment.

To top it all off, my chosen board doesn't have IDE (which is understandable, old tech). So I'm giving my old 250gb IDE to my girlfriend and... as much as Phantom will likely disagree, I've gone and brought a second-hand Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb Sata3 drive off TradeMe for a cheap $35. And it still has warranty till July 2013.

I really don't care if it's second-hand, it's cheap and it's Sata3, and it'll work fine as my storage drive for a long time.

Sorry Phantom, didn't mean for it to sound like that. But you are right when you've said in the past, brand new warranties are handy to have when it comes to PC parts.

All being said and done, I should know better than to be spending more money at this point. Lesson learnt. I'll be sticking with what I've got planned already, and I have considered just going non-sli to save money, who knows. I'll see how it goes when the time comes.
