Hi all.

So I have found that my issues with connectivity recently have basically been because the access point I connect to ( as in, my ISP's wireless AP, not my local one ) is only receiving my signal at about 6dB s/n. My receive is about 20dB.

The only solution the ISP have is for me to part with $1800 and get a back-haul quality dedicated 5.8Ghz link which is quite a lot of money really. It would be fast, but that's not really what I am after.

What I would rather do is either get a high gain antenna - say, 32dB. My current one is 24dB. Sure, its not strictly legit... but who is to know?

Alternately, keep the current antenna and put a 2.4G line amplifier into it and blast the signal out at significantly higher than the current 250mw. Say, 1000mw. That will give 6dB more, which the powers that be claim will significantly improve the link quality.

My issue here is I don't know where to find either the high gain antenna or the line amp ( I might even do both... )

Anyone have any suggestions?

Right, you find me a nice waterfront place to plonk all 350 hectares on.

I might subdivide it then.

Would probably be worth about $500K/Ha....

175mil would suit me ok.

Then I could get fiber laid to my door...

Cheers robotic, will investigate these. I found a 2w version from one of those links. That combined with a 24db antenna would probably ensure I had plenty of transmit power....

Might make some people unhappy though.

no probs, I thought they might help with ideas about whats available at what costs. Might be worth you checking youve got the best kind of antenna too and that its functioning propely, would be awful to spend just to find its a crow or seagull perch :D

The cat hunts near the antenna, would make for a brave bird to roost there!.

One prob is that the cpe has too higher power output for any of the inline amps I have found. Might have to find out how easy it is to limit. The Ubiquity stuff is very easy to limit...

Well thats the problem, if his problem gets worse we wont see major online, and his gaming will be out the window.

So the transmit power is too high on the antenna connection for the inline amps? Is that what you mean?

Indeed Robot...

Still waiting to hear if the meraki ( which is what the ISP use as the CPE, albeit with a custom firmeare ) is able to be limited to "safe" output levels.

I wish they could get the Ubiquity stuff working with their AP's. I have a spare 1w bullet sitting in my cupboard.
That _would_ have sufficient transmit power.

Ive read here and there on a quick dig about using different firmnwares, try having a search or put up a post on the ubiquity forms mabye? Bound to be others who have had to troubleshoot similar problems. I read somewhere that the mod to the meraki units is openWRT

openwrt.org/

meraki.com/linux/

Can you tell me specifically which Meraki model it is and what Ubiquity it is and I can possibly rake around for more detail. If openWRT is anything like DD-WRT like I use for my routers its easy to mess with all the wifi parameters including output power levels.

What I would sometimes do in this situation is write a support request post in detal, copy it and put it on both vendors sites, and put cross links to the other post in the other formum on the posts :)

Will wait to see what the ISP come back to me with.

They claim that their firmware is 8Mb, and the UB stuff is only 4MB, so simply wont fit on their products.

However, where there is a will, there is a way.

Either that or I stump up $1800 for a dedicated 5.8Ghz link and effectively become part of their backhaul network. Will give me better speed and latency, but thats fairly expensive!.

I was just given an open-mesh OM1P to try as the CPE - the ISP have found that their firmware works well on these. 60mw. So any line amp will work wonders on it :)

Now just to see if I can find a NZ or OZ supplier of them as opposed to US based.

DD-WRT is a replacement firmware you flash your devices with, its a hell of a lot better than stock firmwares and far more configureable :) For home use I buy specific Linksys models and the forst thing I do is reflash them with DD-WRT, gives you a far better performing, stable and configureable device akin to something youd have to spend Cisco enterprise class device money on :)

Apparently the Meraki and the Open-Mesh use manufacturer modified versions of OpenWRT, another maker of replacement firmwares.

I am pretty sure that the firmware includes the stuff required to connect to the isp. Not 100% sure, but it would not be so good to lose that ability :p

Will try to find a line amp and see if I can get 500mw+ to my antenna.

Well outside NZ regs of course :p
