A common problem, which is now my own problem.

Even since going SLI, I have been experiencing it. Framerates stick at a high 80+ in BF3 and Diablo 3, but every few 1-2 mins it stalls for about 1 second and then resumes as if nothing happened. More often in Diablo 3.

I've been googling Micro-Stutter all night, and haven't found anything solid, other than one guy who changed to more (and higher quality) memory, and that fixed his problem entirely.

Anyone care to put in their two cents?

Welcome to the wonderful world of SLI. It's like a double edged sword. You get better performance but SLI comes with a price. A slew of stuttering, flickering and CTD's. One of the very reasons I never went back to SLI with my latest upgrade. I had too many issues with SLI.

From poking around on the net it would seem that lower GPUs in SLI tend to suffer from perceived micro-stutters. Lots of theories as to why and if it's just the 60 to 30fps for a micro-second being noticeable where if everything was running 30fps you'd never see it.

Some are saying that SLI with the best GPU in the range is the way to go, others seems to point at other bottlenecks like RAM and CPU.

Have you installed the game profile download from nVidia? You could play with these for BF3 and maybe disable AA or some of the other more taxing settings and see if it goes away. It used to be a download on it's own but it may be part of the driver/control panel install now. Anyway, if you can see games already listed with special settings when in SLI mode that it's already there I guess. This link might help you out:

I really don't know what this stuttering is all about. I heard Jason talking about this subject the other day and am 100% sure I have never witnessed it. This also goes for when I used to run Voodoo2 SLI and that's saying something!

I like the theory of bottle necking Karl; considering the SLI technology and the way it is supposed to function could also be a timing issue between the 2 cards.

I think he's returned the cards. It would have been interesting to check they were both running the same firmware.

Naw, I'm done with SLI. I'll be getting a 580 soon, and if there ever comes a time when that isn't powerful enough. I'll just sell it and buy a more powerful single card.

Who knows, nVidia might be able to fix the sli problem in a version or two. Some fancy frame-management system or what not. Surprised they haven't fixed it by now actually.

I have never had this problem, but a friend who has a pair of 570's gets it all the time - which really pisses him off. But the funny thing is that putting his cards in my computer fixed the problem, and my cards in his computer did not stutter. They all get higher frame rates in my computer though, even though his is of higher spec.

Mine ( at the time ) was an I7960, 24GB ram. His is a I7 3930K with 16GB ram. I cant imagine its the total amount of ram. He has a Vortex 3 and I have the Revo drive - maybe thats the difference?

Personally I wouldn't take Dman's left nut but it has to be something along these lines where something else is causing the problem. Maybe it's a driver for something else.

Would have been easy to pull the sound card and use the onboard sound to see if it stopped.

My 580 SLI setup runs very well. ;)

Man, did some Googling and sure enough, SLI combined with X-Fi sound cards do cause video stutter. The fix looks to be a simple registry change recommended by Creative here .

Dam Im good :)
Let us know Klaw if that solved your problem. I'd like to keep my left nut. Im rather attatched to it.

I had the exact same issue as you with my last setup and I had an Xfi card installed. Removed card and wallah...fixed. There have been known cases with certain mobos to have these conflictions with hardware. Worth a shot anyway.

Ah, that would be what the problem was with my friends computer then. He has a Xi-Fi. I have a Xonar STX.

The STX is a far better sounding card anyway, if you have 2channel headphones. Its got much better definition and MUCH tighter bass.

I have the card all boxed up ready to be sent away now, looks like I'm getting Jason's GTX580, and he's getting something else.

Either way, I think I'm over creative sound cards. Will likely sell mine and get an Asus DS. They have better Windows 7 support and features.

You will love the Gtx 580. Bottom end cards are meh imo. I wouldnt waste my time with one. It would be like driving a Daihatsu Charade compared to a V8.

Plus high end cards have a much longer lifespan in terms of having to upgrade again.
