As of recently, I've attempted to remedy the problem that I can't fly for shit. On any given day I can hold my own and give a beating on the ground, but I can't fly for shit. lol

I tried using a joystick, but learnt quickly that technically... a joystick isn't as accurate as mouse/keyboard.

First attempts were bad. lol. I managed to nose-dive atleast a dozen times before I even hit anything let alone kill it. lol

Started to get the odd air kill from the less-elusive beginners pilots like myself, and managed to finish my first round at a spectacular 7 kills, 24 deaths. Atleast I unlocked flares. lol

At that point, I realised there must be something I don't know. So I proceeded to google "Flying BF3 Jets". Wow. Within minutes I'd learnt more than I'd expected.

Now it's no small secret that I've never been much of a pilot in any of the BF series (Except 1942, I was kind of decent there. And I used to play BF2 choppers pretty good), so I lacked even some of the basic info when it came to JETS.

So I learnt....

Keeping airspeed as close to 300 when turning = best. I did not know that, but it makes sense. I got a good grip of this skill within a hour of Kharg Island, but still died ALOT. Think it was 13 kills to 28 deaths. M3RR1K was there to watch my fails. lol

Dipping over a hill = good way to ditch the lock from a AA or Soflam. Worked well, but doesn't work so well against enemy jet locks. lol

Afterburner = good way to out-run rockets and out-distance someone trying to lock-on. Worked well, sometimes. Need more practice

Being chased by an enemy jet? Going full speed (afterburner) while dodging when being chased till he matches speed, then suddenly hitting the brakes and pulling a REALLY tight 300 speed turn either up or down = good way to loose him, but doesn't always work.

Pulling on your brakes = Gives ALOT more time to aim on a strafing run, but can make you a fine target for a AA tank or a locked on missile.

Flares = Something you can't live without, unless you're a REALLY good pilot. lol. Pulling a good 300 speed turn will often loose a missile tho.

Returning to base = If you're being chased, sometimes going back to base will result in SOMEONE there being in the AA turret, and if they're any good... that pesky jet will become scrap metal.

Air Radar = Everyone's favourite unlock apparently, but I haven't quite gotten it yet. Close.

Helicopters = Easiest kill, ever. Jets kill choppers, period. I got most my kills on Kharg Island from helicopters.

Rocket Pods = ALOT of fun against tanks, as long as you have a nice straight strafing run, and can hit their side/rear armor. Sometimes if you're quick, you can soften the tank up with a few minigun rounds before switching to rockets. Works REALLY well to ensure a kill.

All in all, flying isn't hard to start to learn. But being any good at it, is REALLY hard and will take alot of practice. And chasing a enemy jet with a minigun is ALOT more fun than it looks.

I shall practice flying from time to time, but over-all... I'm still a tank driver at heart, with Assault Soldier coming in a close 2nd.

I suck at flying anything but persevered through it and now I can say that Im only half as shit as I use to be :) I use all those tips Klawful suggested but some of those pilots are insanely good no matter what you do they will outmaneuver you, outgun and outsmart you at every turn. I dont know how they do it.

stupid thing is, you can hit afterburners and outrun a sidewinder missile, that is so not true in real life. and the stinger missiles are crap against the air targets...fail on EA behalf

Yah, stinger missiles only disable even after 2 hits. It's really rare to 2 shot an air target with them.

i was kicked from a server last night for "raping" aircraft...

just because you can fly doesnt mean you own the air...

2 aa rockets WILL down any aircraft... and now easier on choppers too....

but people get upset ...

OGGY raping the airwaves since 2011

2 AA tank rockets, yes. 2 Stinger missiles from a engi? No. Will disable, but will rarely kill.

Soflam is kinda OP to be honest. Instant disable I could possibly go with, but instant death? Getting a lock is sooo easy, and flares do nothing to stop it.

Same goes with the guided-shells from tanks. Me and TeMorituri we're in a tank together earlier, and I was using the 3rd seat to lock on targets with the laser designator, and he'd fire off the guided-shells. Instant death for any jet/chopper. And HEAVY damage for any tank, a 2nd shot from main gun generally finished them off well and truely.

Javelin/tank shell damage needs to be tweaked by a good 20-30%, and the soflam lock-on speed a bit slower. Should be easier to destroy a soflam too, any single bolt-action sniper shot should destroy it instantly without fail, As well as any explosive round that lands near it. Should be a tool that needs to be well-placed and defended.

That movie has some WICKED footage, my step-dad has watched it like 20-30 times on the TV over the years. lol.

Not even BF3 jets look or sound that good. You got a LONG way to go Dice... but BF3 certainly is a HUGE improvement over everything on the market (Except possibly H.A.W.X and H.A.W.X 2).

Wonder why Dice didn't get wise and make a pure jet-only map and a new game mode just for it? Would draw in a TON of jet enthusiasts, pilots, and ex-pilots. Some ex-pilots spend a small fortune on flight-sims because of health problems stopping them from getting their licence again.

The thrill never dies. heh

PS: And yes, it's 2:26am. I can't seem to get to sleep. lol

Remember that to use a soflam properly takes at least 2 people, and you dont get many of them. So really, it takes up 3 players, a recon, ammo and engineer. Get 3 people wit rpg's or smaw's attacking a tank and see how fast it dies.... Same as 3 people with stingers attacking a helicopter, once those flares are gone, its bye bye...

Very powerful weapon? sure, but unbalanced? I don't think so as it takes so many resources to correctly utilize it.
