Lads,

I have 2GB ram, when I ALT-TAB out of 2142 sometimes I crash.

I run XP Pro 32bit.

Question is, is it because I only have 2GB ram that it crashes or is it a 2142 thing. Interested if ppl with big rammage have a more pleasurable alt-tab experience?

FYI - I have a 5600 AMD x2 processor.

Hi Action

Alt-TAB is all good for me while running 2142. However, its not advised while in the 3d environment. Does your system still crash if you alt-tab while in the server selection screen?

PS: im running Vista 64 Bit with 4Gb RAM and an XP6000 dual core.

Cheers

3rd environment?

It does not crash when i esc out of the game, only when im actually playing.

What I would like to do is alt-tab into admin tool (CC) without crashing.....

You got it - 3D environment = while playing game (not advisable but works with mine).

I highly recommend you press ESC key then ALT-TAB, that should work, give it a try.

hey action, yes i have the same issue, when i alt+tab bf2142 will minimize, then when i try bring it up again it freezes in windowed mode, bringing up task manager shows bf2142 not responding,so i have to end process and start the game up again.do you get this?i got an d/c amd 6000+ i had 2 gigs for a while then recently put an extra gig in.my ram runs at 800mhz.
i had once minimized it when NOT connected to an online game(just in the bf menu)and i had no probs maximizing the window/game again so this leads me to belive it could freak out when the games connected online,possibly...

lol im still running socket 478..2gb ram

I heard a rumour that it may be linked to you not having any videos in the bf2142 mods folder.. these are the start up vids that you have when the game start the EA splash..Dice splash...
They say if you were to remove all the into vids from the folder the game would start faster which it does but you should leave 1 vid in the folder I leave the smallest one there.
try that see if that helps.
think the vids are kept in ?:\Battlefield 2142\mods\bf2142\Movies
i just have the dice 3mb file left in there

1. Vid folder should only have the training video so it's still available from the menu if needed (good to show friends what the game is about)

2. I can switch to desktop OK and see 2142 minimised, if I switch back to the game I get black full screen, no graphics, but perfect game sounds. Only way to fix it then is to use task manager (which takes me back to desktop) and stop the 2142.exe process and reload the game.

It'll come down to many aspects, makes and models of hardware, video cards and driver revisions, ram, your windows configuration and environment, the way the north and south bridges communicate on your mobo and how their bus lanes are configured and in relation how much system bandwidth is available at any given time, the instruction sets in your CPU's and how many execution pipes are available (same applies to your GPU) what else windows is doing in the baground (whether youre aware of processes or all the bollocks it gets up to supposedly as normal system events).

One probability is as is mentioned RAM, MS said XP needed 512MB to function as a minimum, which means you can double that in reality, add onto that other factors and it doesnt leave a lot spare with 2GB, which means the system is going to be making heavy use of the paging file, so, on top of the ram issue youre adding your storage system into the equation. That means disk speeds, seek times, write and read speed, caching memory etc. etc.

You could up it to 4GB and find its better, and then again it might not solve it, however these days you should be running 4GB anyway, and if your board supports dual channel you really should be taking advantage of that, especially if its an nforce board. Believe it or not even makes and type of ram will have an effect on the discussed problem.

With all the criticism thats levelled at EA it wouldnt suprise me if you took 3 identical set ups and found each one behaves differently anyway.

IF you want to go into depth it would be best to give a full spec breakdown of your hardware first :)
