And fecking underground cables which get hit by lightning!

no internet.... no vdsl modems, no wireless connection, all dead...

I am going to cry!!!

And my phone has a ping to the SAF server of about 2 hours. :( :( :(

Ah well... Maybe I might get some more work done over the next while huh? :D

Lightning can really blow the arse out of electronics, and what it dosent kill tends to end up with too much "character" - sorry to hear of your troubles.

Yeah, unfortunately it has that effect. All the electronics in the house are behind a PureAV PF60 or better - its just the wireless CPE and the VDSL ethernet bridge which got nuked - the lightning must have hit the ground somewhere near where the cable is buried.

Which is good as my stereo equipment is far more important than a few days interweb, and the insurance co might have funny things to say about a $200K claim for stereo gear :D

I is getting works done at least ;)

Just a pain - no email, no phone, no games :(

Phone is bad for interwebs connection.

My sympathies, some of us were on modems a lot longer than broadband in its many forms has been around.

Seen plenty of lightning damage, even high voltage ground discharges non lightning related :)

Also been a subject of a few of VERY VERY near miss strikes (<20m), trust me its not just static makes the hair stand up lol. :D

Near misses, 1 past the plane - squeaky arse moment, one past the car (not a worry) and one nearby in the torrential rain in Singapore (wasnt looking directly at it luckily otherwie might have wrecked the eyes - felt it coming though with the static charge buildup :S) :D

Actually no phone sounds like a good thing.

Insurance, another word for extortion or confidence racket. Got a relative, roof blown off by lightning, insurance company "reassessed" and refused payout, said despite taking payments for years that roof wouldnt have been blown to shit in first place if built properly, their arsehole assessor didnt see a problem with it years earlier.

This was a major high energy strike, wouldnt have mattered if the roof was made from reinforced concrete!

Criminal.

Much to my disgust, I have discovered that the lightning has also nuked the copper in the ground - I got my new VDSL modems today, put them in, and nothing.. So I did a line test on the line, and there appears to be at least 8 breaks in the line.

So until I get myself a 1km roll of single mode fiber, And find the time to trench it in,I am not playing.

Anyone have experience with vodems or T sticks for online gaming? Hows the latency?

I Actually bit the bullet today and grabbed myself a Vodafone sim card with a 6gb/month plan on it, open term. So once I get myself sorted and get the gaming PC to where there is cell phone coverage I _might_ possibly be back online gaming. Not too sure yet though as I am getting pings of c250ms to google.com and c125ms to the saf server... not quite the usual 40ms...

Stoopid vodafone wont let me attach that plan direct to my cell phone plan, so I have to put the sim into a different phone and use that as the modem and no voice. Seams strange to me!

As for getting the fibre ( or is that fiber? ) into the ground, I have had some pretty sharp prices on it - multi mode at $1.70/meter direct burial, and single mode at $4/meter. Just waiting on one last price, then will be ordering it.

Then I have to dig a 800 odd meter 800mm deep trench, dump it in there, fill it in, terminate the fibre and figure out what I want on each end. Then I will be back in business properly :)

Any ideas what sort of data gaming will consume per hour?

Oh.. I preordered BC2 yesterday too, so have a beta key.. I assume there is a copy doing the rounds? :D

I am about 20Km south of Cambridge. No SAF members near here to the best of my knowledge. I think the Auckland players are closest - about 2 hours drive.

I will get it in fine thanks though, its getting the fiber that I am finding a little budget challenging!.

Mobile data latency, no better than satellite Im afraid, I'll be suprised if you can game with it Im afraid :(

Its fine for browsing etc etc though.

Get a good 3G modem with a good antenna on it and youll probably improve things a little compared to a phone antenna, what was the fastest qoted protocol from Vodafone for your tariff and whats the best speed coverage you get at your location?

Another thing you might consider is an outdoor router and a couple of directional high power wifi antennas (backfire type are highly rated) for the meantime if the fiber is going to be a while coming. Only snag is you would need a small power source at remote end.

@ I-Robot

V/F _claim_ 3.6MB ( not Mb ) per second - or at least the guy in the store did. I suspect he has confused MB and Mb somehow.
The coverage here varies from excellent to very poor, in the space of about 3 meters. Currently have the phone on the roof in a click clack container with a power source, and a blue tooth connection to my PC. rough as!.
I have spoken to a couple of others who are using a vodem or various alternatives of them, and they claim no better latency or transfer rates than I am getting, I suspect strongly its a limitation of the VF network as opposed to the CPE.

@ Survival

3 Waikato SAFfers huh? At least there is the possibility of a local lan then. I have plenty of mates with super low latency interwebs access, mostly via the comp sci department at the uni, so maybe I should ask them about getting access to that. I think they have something like 100Mb with a latency to sydney of <20ms. Should make for okish gaming ;)

Looks like data usage is no issue unless my partner gets torrenting more McClouds Daughters :S :S

Just hopped into 2142 and see that Jokers and the SAF servers are sitting around the 190 - 200ms... not exactly great, but I have often played on US servers which are worse. Lets see what the jitter is like!

3.6Mib sounds about right, then youve got 7.2 and so on, not to mention peering contention issues in your network subnet and cell area. Thats assuming your singnal is strong enough for max bitrate and isnt ramping back to slower protocols, and of course your upstream is considerably slower and higher latency too.

One other possibility I didnt mention would be a 3G router, that would have a better antenna, you even get ones with exterior or mast mount antennas and so on.

I wont even go into Femtocell stuff ( www.geekzone.co.nz/juha/3330 ) as although they are around and still seriously rare I dont know if one would have the range for your use from the current good remote network point. (Broadband -> Localised 3G)

then theres wimax, like wifi but in km's range instead of meters range :) Also still rare.

Reason I suggested directional wifi if you have power for remote router is it wouldnt be much of a latency increase versus a hell of a lot less cost.

Your mobile coverage sounds about as good as where I am! Bluetooth will destroy your latency even worse lol.

I-Robot, my internet was always a wireless link - its the only form of low latency connection we can get here. Its from the Waikato uni's offshoot Rurallink. A simple but surprisingly effective implementation of an 802.11 protocol. Generally it feels better than DSL broadband, albeit at a max tx rate of 1Mb symmetrical. The problem is that its not line of sight from my house to the access point. My parents house is, but thats also not line of sight for me. I looked into it when I initially put the copper in the ground for the VDSL link and it was then the most cost effective. It still would be if it had not been subject to lightning damage 3 times now. Its just too much risk having copper to bring in high voltages to sensitive devices. So now time for fibre. Unless you can point me to a wireless implementation that is not requiring line of sight? Its only 600m in a straight line!. I have not looked into Wimax but there is not much in the way of info on it online?

I have never heard of a 3g router, but I suspect its just not worth it for me - the only thing I find is not usable via the 3g phone connection is gaming, and its not as if my life totally depends on it.

I just had a round on Jokers, and while the latency sat around 170ms most of the time it felt very laggy and not really overly playable. Specially not for titan defence!.
