S.A.F aBuckenFastard created the topic: October 15th is Sapper's day
As the topic line says tomorrow October 15th is Sapper's day just like ANZAC day it is a day of rememberance for the fallen and the living. For anyone who reads this and has served in the armed forces from any country do your part and attend your corp day when it comes around next and give a little thought to those who are still serving and fighting for the freedoms that others take for granted.

UBIQUE

QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

I googled it but understand most of it from basic :

Battle Honours:

For their presence meritorious service at almost every battle, the Artillery of Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand bear the single battle honour UBIQUE . All Gunners belong to the same Regiment, and honours won by any reflect on all.

MOTTOES:
UBIQUE (Everywhere)
QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT (Where Right and Glory Lead)

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE
shame upon him who thinks evil upon it

Te is only slightly correct with what he has put.

Sapper's Day is for Engineers NOT GUNNERS (that would be gunners day or more correctly St Barnibas day (patrin saint of miners eg explosives etc)) as a sapper is not only a rank but also a job description.

UBIQUE is also a battle honour given to the engineers because it is taken for granted that for the battle to happen engineers played some part in helping it happen it is also the only battle honour engineers have been granted. there are other units that have been given it as well eg transport, logistics etc

as for the other motto's there are lots of translations but what i was told was

QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT (Where Honour and Glory Lead)

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE (Evil be to whom who thinks evil)

google latin to english translation if you need it folks.

Have fun with the interpretation though, one word can have different meanings depending where it is in the grammatical structure or if it is appended to another word :)

I think anything that honours those that had the courage to stand up and fight for a good cause is a great thing.

Quid quid latine dictum sit, altum videtur :silly:

Well boys and girls you asked for it. Are you all sitting quietly & comfortably? then I shell begin.....................

It all began a long time ago in a land far far away (Te thats FAR FAR AWAY) when the forces of the Empire were fighting in the Crimea. The valient infantry and engineers were in the front lines while the cowardly gunners were some (for the time/technology) considerable distance behind.
When news of a terrable defeat slowly started to filter back to the gunners, as more and more casulties came slowly moving back it became clear that it was true that the infantry were being pushed back, with dred in their hearts at the thought of having to see the faces of the enemy and have to fight hand to hand, they fled.
As the infantry and engineers slowly made a fighting withdrawl they came upon the deserted guns and realised that should the guns fall into the hands of the enemy then the losses would be horrific (as in those days it took time to move artillary by horse and set them up again to fire, so captured guns could simply be turned around and used against their previous owners) so with no small amount of courage the infantry stopped to give the engineers cover so they could use the guns to slow the enemy advance.
Once the enemy advance had been slowed, the generals decided that the guns needed to be saved (getting new guns took time and were not cheep) and brought back to a safe distance and the fighting line re-established. The transport corp moved forward to save the guns and move them back.
Some time after the battle when news filtered back to the Empire, the ?KING? (not sure may have been the Queen) was not happy as the gunners had the title Royal (Rolay Artillary) in front of their name it was decleared that for saving the guns the corp of transport would wear a lanyard (how a gun was moved by the gunners to pivot it) and that the Engineers would because of a similar worn emblem gain an extra flame (both engineers and gunners wear a flaming grenade badge but now the Engineer grenade has 13 flames and the gunners 11) and for the actions of the gunners their corp belt would have a yellow band as a mark of shame and would have to carry it for something like 300 years...............

well boys and girls did you like the story?

little known facts... if not for the engineers there would be no airforce (started by engineers flying hot air baloons and no submarine branch in the navy (started by engineers as an underwater means of moving explosives onto ships in harbours) first use of a torpeedo was used in the American civil war crewed and fired by ENGINEERS
