Hi guys, I'd like to ask some questions. hope I'm not out of order. Thinking out loud here.

The looking into I did into your server has been instrumental in clueing me up to gameservers in general.

For some time now I've been holding a web-hosting biz plan and set up in mothballs, I've run my own webserver for many years and know a fair bit there is to know about the business. What stops me is the support level required for lots of individual accounts, although recently I have been thinking what the hell and give it a go. Since looking into gameservers more it seems the client base versus income would be more of a beneficial prospect. By the looks of it I could easily handle the server.

I've been looking into servers in NZ and how to take one and make it a gameserver since it seems as you say the market is poorly catered for. I have found a way to do it, I've researched the control panel software and requirements and it can be done relatively easily. There are many well established methods and software out there, a couple of which stand out in front and one that surpasses the others.

So much so I'm tempted to give it a go, and from what you say NZ seems like a good place to start. I've found some good dedicated server companies with good network setups and hardware that are plugged into the main backbone of the NZ internet with good redundancy. This should allow both fast local and international connections, they permit gaming and have good support infrastructure on the hardware.

This leads on to my questions, if you dont mind me asking.
  • What is the market demand like there?
  • What is your current monthly outlay for your game server?
  • Are you well connected in the NZ clan scene?
  • Would you be in a position to assist in marketing in return for benefits?

What I'm thinking is if youre interested I'll set one up, if its suitable for your needs we could come to a deal of some sort thats better than your current outlay, and if things progress well work towards a situation that actually pays you.

I look forward to your feedback.

Have you missed to point where it comes to limited services in NZ? There are only 2 options for ranked EA servers here, one with ICONZ, the other gamers.net. Only gamers.net rent ranked servers. We would not want to rent a server that it's ranked.

No, that has not escaped my attention, I'm looking into ways to do that too. There would be no point in doing it if unranked servers were the only possibility. Apparently EA have closed their ranked server provider programme to new applications, however it might be possible that some of the gamecp providers are permitted to provide ranked servers via their software, making enquiries along those lines atm.

Ultimately this is a good learning exercise for me and I'm primarily doing this because I see a potential way to help. If my efforts are not welcome please let me know and I will not make mention of it again :D

Thanks, I've now got all the info and narrowed down the software to do this. I agree unranked servers = no point. Server wise I could set it up tomorrow.

My efforts are now directed into finding out just what is the state of play on ranked servers, whether the admin panel software from the companies has dispensation to provide ranked servers and if not I'm also seeking information and ways to approach EA to clarify whats possible.

Apparently EA only granted approval based on a set of criteria a host had to satisfy, this has lead to some unfair monopolies in some regional areas.

Based on the qualifying criteria I've learned so far I'm completely mystified how your current host got their licencing.

I'll post back if there are any new developments.

It's a long history that gamers.net.nz has. Started out as a group of uni students flatting together and setting up gaming servers (skankyflat.net.nz). Then they got more corporate and merged into a large local ISP and became jetstream-games (part of the telecom ISP arm, called Xtra with jetstream being their broadband brand), then Xtra didn't play ball as they wanted them to and were not so worried about gaming so they moved away again and became what they are now.

That's my understanding and I'm sure there's the real story somewhere online with more detail. Don't quote me on any of this!

Do as you like, don't take any notice of my posts. :)

Pah. It seems its not possible to get ranked server provision approval. Sorry guys, I tried, the only thing stopping me being able to do this. See the following :

yea also as apposed to web servers game servers are likly to require handson admin E.G patching the servers which can be quite regular and also as with bf2142 the actual server software can be a bit flaky

you do have a Good idea but as i see it one of the problems that u may be picking on with gamers.net is that they do not host a server i believe orcon actually do (not sure though)

P.S i think thay have 2 or more servers because they also host ts and ventrillo and also that the bf2142 voice is actually a independent application

Ah, as I suggested in another thread, theyre leasing their server from someone else.

A traceroute leads to 3 servers but 2 could just be nameservers alone. Game servers should be no harder to admin in theory, I manage my own webserver and have done for years, done windows servers and web servers from time to time too. Its not too bad. Thats why I suggested a managed server, they cost more but theres a support SLA you can fall back on. A good gamecp like TCadmin should take the majority of the hardship out of management.

Mind you if the 2142 web server is as flaky as the game then that may be a differnt case :)

On another note if you do have to look out of country many people seem to speak well of Hypernia, and there is an option apparently to provide ranked servers if you lease a dedicated through them. Alternatively they also provide per-slot servers. Perhaps one of you could ask them if theres a test IP they can provide to ping? Then you could all try it and perhaps satisfy youreselves the ping rate is low enough, apparently their AUS datacenter is in Sydney.
