So I have decided to update the HTPC case I have - wanting a true silent ( no HDD's and no fans ) so am looking to the dedicated HTPC cases.

Have found a really nice unit, which to actually get one here to NZ will cost nearly $600 as it has to be shipped from the UK. Its the Streacom FC50 which looks uber cool, but at $511 and no doubt this will attract GST and possibly duty on arrival, its getting a little carried away I think. Will be running an I5 sandy bridge in it probably.

Anyone seen these available in NZ or OZ? Or what other cases have people seen which will fit in nicely beside higher end Hifi gear? If I could find a case that looked just like a Bel Canto case I would be stoked, but I think that will be a bit hard, and probably more expensive being all milled alloy. Whatever I get, I need at least one full height expansion slot in it, so it will need to have a PCI riser in it or an expansion extension at the very least.

Alternately I could go for a more conventional case, with a fanless cpu cooler, but then getting one which looks nice, is not too big and not ugly ( Most HTPC cases are the result of ugly having a clusterfuck with repulsive IMO ) is often difficult. Absolutely no way do I want one with an LCD display on it. Those are for designed for buyers with undersized appendages between navel and testicles.

So, any thoughts or ideas anyone?

What OS and software you going to be running major? I only ask because ...

Have you considered a mythtv frontend & backend setup. Most of the hard working stuff, cards and storage in a standard case somewhere where a bit of heat and fans dont matter, and a nice reasonably powerful itx setup in a nice itx case for a frontend with the two networked together, save you quite a lot on case expenditure and put the money into hardware instead.

There are different distro releases of myth but the best one Ive seen is mythbuntu.

Streacom dont appear to have any regional distributers there :

Not having much luck finding nz results for streacom or many other good makes of HTPC case, but did find this in US :

www.atechfabrication.com/HTPC_cases.htm

Perhaps something similar from Silverstone? Some of their stuff gets NZ results.

www.silverstonetek.com/product_case.php?...&case=c_slim&area=en

Not really a result but a similar concept from a good UK maker :

Along similar lines for heatpipe cases is hfx but theyre usually shockingly expensive :

Best NZ results I could get for HTPC cases is this :

Myth TV sucks arse ...use Mediaportal it has more plugins more users and more versatility

A case that slim..wtf for? You have speakers that couldnt be hid in an elephants jacksie and you want a teeeny tiny widdle HTPC box ???

More to the point if you then want a totally passive cooled system where the hell are you going to stuff a GPU with passive cooling fins ... even the most snazzy AMD 7750 draws over 55 watts and will heat the shit out of your box with DDR5 memory

Go hard for a nice silverstone or Origen : sit it next to your amp and be happy

Not at all Duncan :)

Since I own an HTPC (and am currently rejigging it)I know plenty about em

I tried all the formats in the beginning..Karl was an avid egger on so I tried a few of the different front ends available but ended up using the simplest one available for Windows because it kept me from hours of fiddling

Poo almost certainly knows enough about HTPC too and is just casting about before making the plunge on
new version with SAF appeal no doubt :P

@Major... worth e-mailing the manufacturer and seeing if they have a Oceania distributor? Closer the better for shipping. Also, see if they ship you a cheap "sample".
