Personally I'd recommend EVGA, ever since I got my 550Ti SC, I've not had a single problem. First card in years that's been so stable!

Their support is 1st class, and they have a good support system on their website, plus a strong community that can answer ANY question. Those guys know their stuff. Plus, they have a good warranty, and ways to extend your warranty for cheap. As little as $10 can get you an extra 2 years I think it is.

Then to top it all off, they have great offers and free games. Such as including a full copy of 3DMark11 with any 500 series card.

And their cards are ALL rear-venting cooler design, plus they offer some higher-end cards (Possibly a 570) that has a pre-attached water-cooling block.

Shit, those prices seem way expensive. I just bought a 6950 2GB twin fan Sapphire for a friend from PB tech in Hamilton for $440 after asking nicely ( rrp is $399+ gst ) and I know that PB is not the cheapest place to get them, but he had just discovered that his 3650 didnt play BF3 too well at 1920*1200... Alphacity have them for around $410 from memory. Slide the switch on them and it turns into a 6970 with no other effort required. Makes for a very cheap 6970. Quiet too. Performance somewhere between a 570 and 580. The card I got Jason apparently runs happily at 950mhz on the gpu and 1500mhz on the ram, but gets a bit noisy a those clocks..

Compared to the toxic version - your paying a lot less, can unlock to a 6970 and overclock to well above the toxic. For about $410 plus postage. Not too shabby. Surely has to be the best value high end card available. Get 2 and you have faster than 6990/590 performance for $820ish - and probably has better cooling being that its spread over 4 slots not 2. ATI's gen 6HD cards dont have issues with crossfire in my experience.

Alternately, a pair of 6870's or 560's will give you excellent performance for about $600 - sitting very close to, if not eclipsing, a 580 in most situations. Both cards available for around $300 - the 560 being the gigabyte OC version.

www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphi...erformance,3042.html is a good guide.

There are plenty of Nvidia and ATI fanboys out there who will rubbish the "other" brand, but both cards are good, and what defines a good buy is what price you can get the required level of performance for when you buy it. Both brands go through good and bad days for drivers, etc.

For what its worth, on ultra settings, for me a single 6950 ( unlocked ) on 1920*1200 would give 54fps average. A single 6970 gave 64fps, a single 580 gave 65fps. Expect a singlt 570 to sit about 58-60 I think. Dual 6970's give 115fps, dual 580s gave 110fps. Going to 2650*1600, on ultra, forget anything thats not dual gpu, the single 6970 gave 35fps, the 580 38. Twin 6970's give me 65 and twin 580's gave me 68. All are averaged FPS rates using Fraps over a 300 second period.

Compared to the toxic version - your paying a lot less, can unlock to a 6970 and overclock to well above the toixc. For about $410 plus postage. Not too shabby. Surely has to be the best value high end card available. Get 2 and you have faster than 6990/590 performance for $820ish - and probably has better cooling being that its spread over 4 slots not 2. Simply put, $$$ per fps, the twin fan sapphire 6950 kicks everything else once unlocked - $410 for 65fps, or more if you want to OC it. compare that to a 6970 at about $550 for the same fps, or a 570 at similar for slightly less fps .

Yeah the prices i put up were a general guide line. Not the cheapest on the net,I was well aware of that.
Like i said if you wernt worried about DX11 then sli gtx275 would be a very cheap upgrade.
yeah one card is often a better choice i was just pointing out an option.
