Let the battle for the duel gpu card begin. I'd love to see what Nvidia has up it's sleeve. The Gtx 580 is a grunty card and they seem to have the fermi architecture, heat and power issue sorted. I have seen some links floating about claiming a duel Nvidia board using the gf104 chip design over the gf110 so I'd expect something along the lines of 2 x Gtx 460's on a single card since it going to be cheaper than the Gtx 580. Maybe you bought too soon Tom :)

Nah. I'm opting for the 3 x 580 this time around. I dont like the idea of having "all your eggs in one basket" approach anymore.

I'm sure the 590 will be awesome but bet the 3 x 580 will better

heat is ok. You have seen my case Te, I can land a boeing 777 in it.

My single GPU card idles at 40DegC and maxs at 67DegC.
My i7 CPU idles at 23DegC and peaks at 42DegC.

But yes, I will need Damo`s PSU to acheive the tri-sli and can see an increase in ambient temp but not too much.

I'm finding it hard to believe the 6990 performance claims until I actually see the performance with my own eyes. Most claims on new cards are 'ALWAYS'' over exagerated and when the card actually comes out the results are far from anywhere near the claim. I remember b4 the Gtx 480 came out and ppl were saying the card would be 4 times faster than Ati's flagship but when it came out the card turned out to be a flop. Most Gpu review sites tend to be biased one way or the other and tend to bite off more than they can chew. I trust my own opinion over some of these sites. The Gtx 580 is the fastest single gpu on the market so I'm finding it hard to swallow that Ati can make a duel card 3 times quicker. Maybe 2 times but no way 3. I've seen Ati's Cayman tech and seen the performance results....soo where is this 'new' technology to achieve/support theses new claims? I'm guessing it'l be a revised 5990.

oooh maybe by then i can get a 6990

i kinda dont like the idea of running 2 or more cards anymore, I'll just save up and the biggest baddest single card I can for my money!!

I think I've seen enough of people with issues and problems with multi card st ups

videocardz.com/28114/evga-slips-dual-gpu...card-geforce-gtx-590

A look at eVGA's Series 500 dual core gpu possibly named Gtx 590 using gf104 chip. I'm guessting it'l be using two gtx560 gpu's.

This card will come out with 2 gig, so one per gpu which is bad. Since dx11 rendering tends to bottleneck with anything less than 1 gig when u crank up the settings. Should've been a 3 gig board. Hopefully the price will outway what it lacks. This is not a Nvidia design but eVGA btw.

590 already? Unreal... nice cooling on it tho, just straight out 3 fans with very little grill to block/control the airflow. 2x 120mm side-fans blowing directly under it would make 1 very happy card cooling-wise.

Tho, I can see one of those heating up ur case a bit either way, since it's not drawing the air out the back.

It'll be pricey tho, couldn't justify the price tag even if I could afford it. Could totally find other stuff to spend that kinda money on.
Personally I don't see any game coming out before christmas this year that'll realistically need more than a 580 or other current top-end card to run it max settings. Other than possibly ID Software's new engine powering their new coming game "Rage", but I am yet to read anything that indicates how much graphics power that engine will need. But I could be wrong... who knows? Maybe it'll be bucket-drooling eye candy monster that eats SLI 580's for breakfast...just to max it out. lol

I have, sitting here on my desk, a 6970 and a GTX570.... Going to play around tonight to see which gives the best experience between the two and keep whichever I prefer.

The joys of having friends in the right places :)

I dont own either yet. And, they are coming at a considerably lower price than RRP. I would not be paying $650ish for either. They dont actually give me a performance boost over the old 4850 pair/triple set I used to run. In fact, the triple set would eat them for dinner FPS wise.

Currently preferring the 6970 - in game there is not a lot of difference ( although the 6970 has a clear FPS advantage on the 30" monitor at 2560*1600, but that size monitor makes me feel more than a little sick when gaming. Reason for preferring the 6970 is that it has better color and contrast in Photoshop. I have tried calibrating both using the Spyder pro and just cant get the same natural saturation or contrast out of the 570....

Phantom was saying that he thinks that the nvidia is sick because its not outperforming the 6970 and is running hot ( and its noisy ) so I will swap it later on ( the guy who got them for me to try has 6 of each for some sort of video wall they are working on ) to check. The guy who supplied them made the comment that when he has 3 in a Dell blade quad Xeon server, the case temp was nearly 10 degrees hotter than when he had the ATI's in it - but the ATI's dont work for him as well as the linux support for ATI is abysmal.

The ATI has not posed any driver issues so far, but I have not gamed much..

Have to admit. The price of the new Ati cards is very appealing. Ati 6000 series are competing with Nvidia 500 series using cheaper price tags to make up for slightly less performance. For what your paying for a gtx 580 it really isnt worth the extra 4 fps when your forking out an extra $200 when u could be getting a 6970 with an extra 500 of mem as well. I think Ati have always been abit more generous with there hardware. Get more for your buk.

Still finding that in game, there is SFA between the cards, although I prefer the presentation the AMD card gives - nicer contrast and better shadow detail. However, out of game, the AMD has it hands down over the Nvidia - specially in Photoshop - the color and contrast is far superior, measurably so with the spyder calibration device. Also, my 30" has a display port on it, and using the display port output on the AMD card means that I can set a color profile on the computer, and the monitor is automatically adjusted to where I set it using the Spyder - so no matter what settings on the monitor have changed, its always reset to "calibrated" so to say.

Other things to note - the AMD card overclocks its GPU to 980 from 880 memory to 6.3Ghz from 5.5 no problems and will run benchmarking for hours like that, whereas the nvidia card would not handle any OC at all from its 797mhz core and 3.8ghz memory.

My mate came around late last night with another 570 as Phantom was concerned that the one I had was under performing, but the other one ( which is a couple of weeks older ) was identical in terms of temp, current draw, performance, etc.

So in game experience is near identical, with the edge tipped to the AMD due to it having a presentation I prefer, and while I have no real intention of leaving a card over clocked when its already performing perfectly well, its nice to know that the 6970 has some headroom. And as it offers more functionality ( display port being the main function I can see using ) and its quieter ( and $50 cheaper too ) its going to stay.
